Course Description

Update on Clinical Research in Veterans with Amputation - 10y Outcomes, Systematic Review & Ongoing Research (AM2025-SE01)

Lower extremity (LE) amputation profoundly impacts physical health, mental well-being, and quality of life, with U.S. veterans facing a significantly higher risk than civilians. Despite this disparity, research on veterans with LE amputation remains limited, creating a critical gap in understanding their unique challenges and rehabilitation needs.

This session will present findings from multiple completed and ongoing research projects, including a 10-year retrospective cohort study of veterans receiving rehabilitative care at the James A. Haley Veterans Affairs Amputation Specialty Care Clinic. Key insights include the relationships between prosthesis use, pain, skin conditions, weight, and prosthesis source, as well as the impact of comorbidities such as diabetes and peripheral vascular disease on mobility outcomes.

Attendees will gain an in-depth understanding of the barriers and facilitators influencing prosthesis use, including novel findings on pain’s evolving role over time. The session will also explore ongoing research efforts, such as clinical trials addressing skin problems, amputation-related scars, and low back pain. These insights will help inform future clinical approaches and research directions aimed at improving rehabilitation strategies and overall well-being for veterans with LE amputation.
