Course Description
Lasting Influences of COVID on O&P Practice and Education (AM2025-OS08)
Significant challenges to established clinical practice and education can create barriers as well as provide opportunities to implement improvements. The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the orthotics and prosthetics field in several ways. While many of the changes have been abandoned as the field returned to pre-pandemic practices, there are lasting effects that may be maintained in orthotics and prosthetics in the future. This session will discuss some of these lasting effects, including the impact on patients (e.g., amputation and wound rates in individuals with vascular disease, physical activity and mental health in individuals with amputation) and the impact on providers (e.g., changes to orthotic and prosthetic clinical practice processes, advances in telehealth, and changes to orthotic and prosthetic educational practices). Panelists will explore challenges that arose from the pandemic as well as improvements that were made to orthotics and prosthetics clinical care and education. The response to COVID-19 pandemic can provide insights into effective and ineffective responses to similar events in the future. This session will also discuss ideas for future directions and further improvements.
