Free Papers: Spinal and Cranial Orthoses (AM2025-FP11)

A 10-Year Review of Cranial Remolding Orthosis Treatment for Infants with Isolated Deformational Plagiocephaly
Presenter:  Anna Trebilcock, BS – Medical Research Scientist, Cranial Technologies
This presentation highlights key findings from a large retrospective examination of the efficacy of cranial remolding orthoses, treatment outcomes across various age groups and severities, and variables that influence CRO treatment of infants with isolated deformational plagiocephaly.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify 4 key factors impacting the efficacy and treatment outcomes of CROs in the treatment of isolated deformational plagiocephaly.
  • Define and describe the calculation of the 3 key anthropometric measurements used to used to classify and evaluate deformational plagiocephaly in infants: the cranial vault asymmetry index- shorter diagonal formula (CVAI(S)), cranial vault asymmetry (CVA), and the cephalic index (CI).
  • Describe the clinical implications of this work and how study findings can support providers in the evidence-based treatment of isolated deformational plagiocephaly.
  • Describe the importance of an early referral and why prompt intervention may be required in moderate-severe cases of isolated deformational plagiocephaly.
  • Formulate 2 evidence-based recommendations regarding the treatment of deformational plagiocephaly with cranial remolding orthoses.

Efficacy of Wood Cheneau Rigo (WCR) Bracing in the Idiopathic Scoliosis Population
Presenter:  Sophia levenson, n/a – Orthotics and Prosthetics Resident, Baylor College of Medicine
A retrospective chart review was conducted assessing the short-term outcomes of Wood Cheneau Rigo (WCR) Bracing in the Idiopathic Scoliosis Population. The primary outcome measured at the 6 month out-of-brace x-ray was curve progression, stabilization, and regression.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the short-term effectiveness of Wood Cheneau Rigo (WCR) bracing.
  • Understand the biomechanical concepts and clinical procedures behind WCR bracing.
  • Recognize that curve correction may be attainable, even in more skeletally mature patients.

Development of a Psychoeducational Support Group Program for Newly Braced Scoliosis Patients - A Pilot Study
Presenter:  Kelly Moton, BS – MS Candidate, Baylor of Medicine
The psychological impact of idiopathic scoliosis has been well established in the literature. To help patients feel supported from the onset of treatment, we developed and implemented a psychoeducational support group program for newly braced patients. This presentation will provide an overview of the program and share the results of our pilot study.

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, participant will be able to describe the pilot study performed.
  • Upon completion, participant will be able to understand the important results of the pilot study.
  • Upon completion, participant will be able to incorporate this knowledge into their clinical practice.

Enhancing Scoliosis Brace Comfort: The Key Role of Orthotists
Presenter:  Megan E. Glahn Castille, MS, CPO/LPO – Certified Orthotist/Prosthetist, Assistant Professor, Baylor College of Medicine, Align Clinic, Scolios-us
Scoliosis brace adherence is often challenging and multifactorial, with both physical and psychosocial components. This presentation focuses on what factors are associated with brace comfort and how orthotists can optimize the patient experience.

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, participants will understand the factors associated with brace comfort.
  • Upon completion, participants will grasp the importance of initial brace comfort.
  • Upon completion, participants will learn ways to improve the bracing experience for patients.
