Learning Objectives
- By the end of this course, participants will be able to describe the key factors in prosthetic socket design, including fit, comfort, strength, and durability, and understand their impact on overall prosthetic function.
- Participants will be able to evaluate existing clinical studies and patient surveys related to the fit and comfort of prosthetic sockets, and identify gaps in research regarding the strength and durability of these systems.
- Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to assess the importance of structural testing for lower-limb prosthetic systems and apply findings from strength and durability evaluations to improve patient outcomes before in-patient use.
Course Description
Transtibial Prosthetic Socket Strength: The Use of ISO 10328 in the Comparison of Standard and 3D-Printed Sockets (JPO032-2B)
A prosthetic socket must be designed and fabricated to ensure appropriate fit, comfort, strength, and durability. With the use of clinical studies and patient surveys, the evaluation of fit and comfort is often reported in the literature, but much less research has been published on the quantification of prosthetic socket strength or durability. Structural testing of lower-limb prosthetic systems can provide insight on the behavior of the system under load and the overall strength of the system, but few studies have evaluated the strength of these systems before in-patient use.
