- Explain the pathophysiology of cranial deformities, including plagiocephaly and brachycephaly, and identify the role of primary care providers in screening and differential diagnosis.
- Evaluate the principles of conservative and postoperative orthotic management for cranial deformities, including the use of helmets and the role of physical/occupational therapy during treatment.
- Assess the evidence supporting orthotic management of cranial deformities and describe the mechanisms used for shape capture in the manufacture of helmets, while understanding the FDA’s role in helmet regulation.
Course Description
Orthotic Management of Infantile Cranial Deformity (CP020)
This certificate program reviews the pathophysiology of plagiocephaly, brachycephaly, and other cranial deformities. The following topics are discussed.
- The role of primary care providers in screening cranial deformities and the mechanism for differential diagnosis
- The principles of conservative and postoperative orthotic management of cranial deformities
- The role of physical/occupational therapy during treatment, and the role of the FDA in the manufacture of helmets
- Review of the evidence for orthotic management of cranial deformity and the mechanisms used for shape capture for the manufacture of helmets
